The East African Community (EAC) may amend its Treaty to make French one of its official languages. Secretary general Juma Mwapachu said French was an important language in the world and that the region cannot ignore it.

He said when he received credentials of the French Ambassador to Tanzania , Mr Jacques Champagne de Labriolle, that there was a likelihood of French being one of the official languages of the Community.

He said the idea was first mooted in April this year by President Jakaya Kikwete in Kampala during the third EAC Investment Conference. Mr Mwapachu said President Kikwete, who is the current chairperson of the EAC Summit, suggested that the French option should be considered.

The Tanzanian head of state apparently floated the idea because two of the EAC member states ; Rwanda and Burundi , still use French as their official language. Already French speaking Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) has applied for an observer status to EAC. The EAC boss said the regional organisation has for sometime considered entrenching Frech language in EAC programmes.

Technocrats support He added that the idea has won the support of some EAC technocrats and regional officials much more so because Burundi was essentially still a Francophone state. “We need to re-look into the Treaty French language can become the language of EAC.

French is an important language in the world,” he said. Mr Mwapachu’s proposal which has come only months after he declared English would remain the official language of the Community.
